The University of Miami, carrying a long tradition of sports excellence, celebrated one of its most storied victories over the No. 1-ranked Nebraska and secured the 1983 Collegiate Football Championship. Led by their redshirt freshman quarterback, Bernie Kosar, the 'Canes entered the game as a double-digit underdog.

In front of a decidedly pro-Miami crowd, the Hurricanes jumped out to an early 17-0 lead. With the use of a trick play known as the "fumblerooski," Nebraska scored in the second quarter to make it 17-7 and by the third quarter they had tied the game at 17. Kosar responded by leading Miami down the field on two scoring drives to give the Hurricanes a 31-17 lead. Nebraska responded in the fourth quarter, scoring two touchdowns, including one in the last minute to make it 31-30. Nebraska coach Tom Osborne then made a fateful decision: rather than win the national title by having the game end in a 31-31 tie, he elected to go for a 2-point conversion. Miami stopped the attempt, resulting in their first national championship.

This image captures the guts and determination of the Miami Hurricanes as one of their long drives results in a touchdown. Bernie Kosar, who repeatedly led them downfield for scores, celebrates in the backfield as the ball crosses into the end zone.
