We met in the Winter of 2004 at a mutual friend's wedding. During the festivities, we began talking about our great-grandfathers, Josh Gibson and Babe Ruth. Immediately, we connected with each other, given the significance of our relatives in the baseball and home-run worlds. Over time, we stayed in touch and became friends. During subsequent conversations, we started sharing our thoughts with each other about the possible "what-ifs" had Josh and Babe had the chance to meet and interact with one another, since there is no known record of these two baseball greats having ever crossed paths in person.

So, we started talking further. There are some interesting scenarios that you can easily imagine about different ways that Josh and Babe could have met and what might have happened. And with that, we decided to commission a piece of art which could reflect a hypothetical interaction between these two superstars. After all, it just seemed so natural - two home-run greats from different leagues, who never got the chance to play or meet together.

Then, we looked at some facts:

  • Josh broke into the Negro League when he was 17 with the Homestead Grays, near the end of the 1929 season. At that time, Babe was still hitting well over 40 home runs and batting over .300 per season with the Major League's New York Yankees.
  • Yankee Stadium had become known as the "House That Ruth Built", thanks to Babe's amazing hitting and ability to attract big crowds.
  • One of Josh's longest home runs ever recorded was also hit in Yankee Stadium versus the New York Lincoln Giants
  • In the offseason, Ruth frequently participated in barnstorming baseball events with Caucasian and African-American athletes (as well as Latin American ballplayers in the Caribbean countries).

    Given that, it's almost natural to think that Babe and young Josh (who was 16 years younger than Babe) could have met during one of these exhibition events. So, what if...
